Surprise! A Common Moorhen parent with three of its five chicks.

Common Moorhens are very prolific and normally have several broods for March through September.

But I have never seen these birds with chicks in January.

And this week is going to be a cold one with day time temps in the low 60s and nighttime temps below 40. Fortunately there is no rain in the forecast.

Here's hoping Mom and Dad can keep them warm.
