A Black Bellied Whistling Duck parent with its four remaining ducklings.

Both parents were looking after the ducklings. But in spite of this, the size of the brood has been whittled down from an original six or eight.

I wonder if experienced parents are more effective in protecting their ducklings than first time parents.

Or is a duckling's survival just a matter of fate.
