Unlike most ducklings, Common Moorhen chicks do not stay close to each other and can often be seen 20 feet or more apart from each other and their parents.

To me this seems to put the chicks at risk and this view seems to be born out by the higher mortality rate of the chicks as compared to the ducklings.
