A Great Blue Heron with its wings lowered to form a sun screen for its two chicks (only one is visible).

I am continually impressed by how caring and protective some birds are of their young.

Great Blue Herons, for example, protect and feed their young for six to eight weeks before the chicks are big enough to leave the nest and look after themselves.
