A parent Great Blue Heron parent attempting to disgorge a large fish for the fledglings to feed on.

I found this event interesting for two reasons.

First, the parent had a difficult time disgorging the fish as it was quite large. And while birds swallow fish head first to lay the fish spines down,  they disgorge the fish tail first which causes the fish spines to lift up. Ouch!

Second, after the parent dropped the fish, the fledglings just looked at it.  My guess is that it was too big for them or they were not hungry. Or at least not that hungry!
